About Julian

Julian Herrera is a lifelong resident of La Quinta and a proud product of our local schools. As an autistic individual, his lived experience is not an afterthought to his policy positions. It's the very foundation from which he governs. He understands that true leadership means building systems that work for everyone, not just those who fit a narrow mold.

Julian is the son of an educator. His mother recently retired as an assistant principal, and that upbringing instilled in him a deep respect for public service and the transformative power of community. He believes that strong communication between the city, local schools, and community organizations is essential to creating a thriving La Quinta. Julian is proud to be the only Democrat-aligned candidate in this race, bringing a progressive, community-first vision to the City Council.

Julian wants to keep valley-trained talent in the valley. He's focused on expanding municipal internships, creating real job opportunities, and fostering a culture of responsiveness that puts residents first. He represents every corner of La Quinta through the at-large district system, bringing the same dedication and care to every neighborhood.

Initiatives for La Quinta

A platform rooted in community, opportunity, and justice

Opportunity First

Julian's vision is centered on creating real opportunity for youth, workers, families, and local businesses. Through the Committee on Opportunity, expanded CTE pipelines, and legal action against discriminatory hiring, Julian is building a La Quinta where everyone can thrive.

Opportunity

  • Create a Committee on Opportunity that brings together youth, government, local businesses, district leaders, and community members to build a shared vision for economic growth.
  • Strengthen communication with local schools to align city and education priorities, ensuring that our education system and local economy work in tandem.
  • Connect businesses directly to district pipelines by expanding existing CTE partnerships, ensuring that our schools and local industries work hand in hand.
  • Create hundreds of new jobs by pressuring businesses to expand hiring, and use the full legal might of government to compel them, including legal action if discrimination occurs.
  • Keep valley-trained people in the valley by offering pathways that make our region a place where talent can thrive.
  • Expand municipal internships and integrate more government and nonprofit grants into this framework.
  • Create internships under this initiative to remove barriers for young people.

Affordability

  • Use the city budget to donate directly to food banks and other nonprofits such as Lift to Rise, because no family in La Quinta should go hungry.
  • Aim to use bond measures to ask voters to pay for critical facilities, including childcare centers, food distribution hubs, and housing assistance programs.
  • Expand access to essential services for working families, seniors, and young parents.
Equitable and community-driven

Responsiveness

  • Create a culture of responsiveness by increasing code enforcement funding and ensuring that every resident feels heard and respected.
  • Encourage direct interaction with the city and aim for fast response times on every inquiry, complaint, or request.
  • Consider expanding contracts or hiring more workers to improve service delivery across all departments.
  • Create more web portals to make government accessible, transparent, and easy to navigate for everyone.
  • Establish regular communication channels with community leaders and local organizations to ensure that the city is always in dialogue with those who serve our community.
Digital-first, people-centered

Hundreds of New Jobs

Julian will use the full legal might of government to compel businesses to expand hiring, creating hundreds of new jobs for La Quinta residents. He will take legal action against discrimination and ensure that every worker has a fair shot at opportunity.

Values and Cultural Change
  • Stronger protections for LGBTQ+ and trans youth, ensuring that every young person in La Quinta feels safe and celebrated.
  • Encourage a culture change in the valley: one that embraces neurodiversity, compassion, and the understanding that our differences make us stronger.
